About AECC
The centre is licensed annually by the ACT Children's and Youth
Services Bureau to cater for 52 children.
The allocation of child care
places in the centre is as follows (age ranges are approximate):
- 12 Babies (6 weeks to 18
months)
- 15 Toddlers (18 months to 3
years)
- 22 Pre-schoolers (3 years to
6 years)
When children reach the appropriate stage of development and are ready
to move up to the next section, every effort is made to accommodate
them as soon as spaces become available.
Each age-group has its own
rooms in the centre; however, the older children have access to other
areas, especially if wanting to visit siblings. Each group has a
comprehensive programme that provides opportunity for the childrens'
development in a caring environment.
Where possible babies are kept
in their routines, and should mothers wish to continue breast feeding
arrangements can be discussed with the staff.
The
Director of the centre is a qualified early childhood teacher. She is
responsible for the day-to-day running of the centre, and for
co-ordination of the programme and the staff and children. All staff
are qualified, experienced child care workers, and many staff members
have been with the centre for a number of years.
There is a fully qualified pre-school
teacher in the Pre-School room, who organises a pre-school program.
At all times there is one member of
staff present for every five children under the age of three, and one
member of staff for every 11 children over the age of three. During
core hours there are thus three staff in each of the Babies and
Toddlers rooms, and two staff in the Pre-School room. Each group leader
or senior staff member has qualifications appropriate to the age-group
in which they work. They are assisted by experienced child care
workers.
Senior staff are responsible for the
weekly planning of activities, the daily routine, and observation and
care of the children in their group.
A bookkeeper is employed to manage
fees, accounts and staff salaries.
We have been accredited by the National Childcare Accreditation
Council,
and the centre has been rated at the highest level of quality.
The
centre is run by a management committee of parents, who are elected
annually by the parent body at the Annual General Meeting of the
association. All parents are encouraged to attend committee meetings,
and are advised of committee decisions and events via the centre
noticeboard and monthly newsletter.
